What GM Foods Are You Eating?

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are a big topic of today.  They have snuck into our food system over the past twenty years largely unknown by the everyday consumer and only in the recent years have genetically modified (GM) foods become more common talk among consumers.

Let's go over what a GMO is, what GM Canadian crops are grown and the main problems and solutions.

Breeding plants is not something new.

Farmers have been saving seeds generation after generation of their best crops and have also been intentionally crossbreeding plants within the same plant species to create hybrid plants.  But Genetic Modification is relatively new with the first crops coming on the market in the early 1990s.

In the infographic below: GMOs Problems and Solution, I give the definition and summary of GMO Foods.

are GM foods safe to eat?

There are many unanswered safety questions and limited human clinical trials regarding GM foods and human health risk.  But it is important to understand that GMO got into the food system with:

  • No post-marketing surveillance
  • No long-term human clinical trials
  • No proper evaluation of plant changes or effects
  • Government approvals based on disproved or untested assumptions
  • Approval based on company-produced science (GMO manufacturers themselves)

This means that no precautionary principle was applied to GMO despite scientists warning about the potential health risks, such as allergens, toxic exposure, new diseases and nutritional problems.  GM foods have now been on the market shelves for twenty years and due to GM foods not being labeled there has been no monitoring of how certain health diseases may be linked to the consumption of GM foods.

There have been numerous animal studies that show significant health impacts including, tumours, organ disruption, and kidney deficiencies. Not to mention the devastating impact GM crops are having on the environment's health as a result of the increased use of pesticides.  All the more reason to limit your exposure and consumption of these foods.

Labeling of GM Foods

There has also been an ongoing fight to have these foods labeled by a number of organizations over the years, including kids right to know and cban.  For twenty years, consistent polls have shown that 88% of Canadians want GM Foods labeled.  However, the vote for labeling GM Foods in Canada that took place on Wednesday 17 May 2017 in Canadian Parliament was voted down.  Unfortunately only 67 MPs voted pro GM Food labeling, which now leaves the consumer to figure out what foods are actually GM and what ingredients to watch out for.
