The Power Of Choosing
The choice you have to step outside your comfort zone, whether that means physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually, is what enables you to move beyond what you have always done.
It is also what allows you to move beyond what is normal or easy for you, so you can enter a new level of health, awareness, feeling, or experience that creates change and true growth in your life.
This is what happened for me on the first day of this year, 1 January 2018.
I went on a volcano trek in the Parque Naturales Nacionales Los Nevados, Nevado de Santa Isabel, which took me to an altitude just below 5,000m (16,000ft) MSL - the highest altitude that I have ever hiked to, and just below the altitude of Mount Everest Base Camp.
We started at 4:30 in the morning in one of those solid Land Cruiser, with huge suspensions, driving up this jungle dirt road that reminded me of the Indiana Jones ride that I went on at Disneyland when I was 11 years old. This bumpy adventure lasted three hours and took us to the trail entry point.
The trek ended up being very challenging.
Hiking at Altitude
When I was serving as a Bioscience Officer in the military, I completed my hyperbaric training, so I have had the opportunity to experience the difficulty of being able to breathe deeply when the oxygen molecules are fewer and far between and also to discover my hypoxic symptoms (this was so I could potentially recognize an hypoxic environment in an aircraft if I ever experience my known symptoms).
All that to say, since the volcano trek was at altitude, the physical exertion from hiking took a lot more effort due to the increase of barometric pressure and less oxygen, it was literally one...step...at...a...time.
The capacity to take in a deep breath was limited as we climbed our way up to the glacier. At that time of the day, the highest we could climb was to the start of the glacier, since the risk was too high with it melting very quickly as a result of climate change.
Measurements are being taken frequently and the date marked on rocks to indicate where the glacier was previously. It was mind-blowing just how fast the glacier is melting and receding towards the true summit...soon it will the first out the six glaciers that exist in Colombia to disappear.
The reason why I am sharing this story with you is because this trek ended up being symbolic for me and my 2018 theme: stepping out.
However, I only realized this as I hiked back down the mountain.
What do I mean by "stepping out"?
Stepping out of my comfort zone.
Stepping outside my comfort zone is not something new in my life.
As I continue to change and grow the way I need to step outside zone also continues to change.
So this year, "stepping out" presents itself for where I am now and what I am wanting to move into.
When I was up at the glacier, it was very challenging to breathe deeply. Despite the discomfort of being at altitude, I was so grateful to be there.
From my experience nothing that is easy or comfortable brings the same level of personal growth, learning, connection or confidence that something hard or uncomfortable does - whether individually or in a group/team.
That is one thing I definitely experienced when I was in the military - the camaraderie that is built so quickly when you go through a challenge together or when you individually push your physical and mental boundaries - it moves you to a new place inside yourself (and often times you even surprise yourself ;)
This is when and where the magic, the transformation, the shift happens.
And this is also exactly what begins to happen when you choose to face yourself, your darkness, your fears, and recognize the limiting beliefs and social conditionings that are holding you back from stepping into the health and life that you envision.
When you choose to let go of what is not serving you, and learn how to love yourself, feel joy and not feel guilty or weird when you do.
I believe we have so much more potential and abundance to experience than most humans are living.
We are so much more when we learn to step outside the physical, mental and emotional barriers that are not serving us or empowering us and our lives.
When we step outside our comfort zones, our beliefs, our conditionings, and move through them, not to the side, nor over, but through, this is when and where the awareness, transformation, and true change happens.
